Michaelhouse Rugby 2026: A Season That Announced the Return of a Contender

Michaelhouse beat Hilton College 20-16 in their second 2026 encounter at home.

There are seasons that are measured by silverware, and then there are seasons that redefine a programme. Michaelhouse’s 2026 rugby campaign falls firmly into the latter category.

Against one of the strongest KwaZulu-Natal school rugby landscapes in recent history, Michaelhouse proved it belongs among the province’s elite. While several heartbreaking defeats were decided by the finest of margins, the character, quality and depth displayed throughout the season have laid the foundation for what promises to be an exciting future.

The campaign ended in unforgettable fashion on 20 June, when Michaelhouse defeated Hilton College 20-16 at Meadows. The victory was far more significant than the scoreline suggested. It marked House’s first victory over Hilton since 2024, their first home derby win since the unbeaten 2015 side, and brought an end to an ten-year wait for a victory over their Midlands rivals on home soil. It was the perfect reward for a group that refused to let narrow setbacks define their season.

The final derby was also symbolic of Michaelhouse’s resilience. Earlier in the year, House had fallen agonisingly short in the opening clash against Hilton, losing 23-21 after staging a superb second-half comeback. Similar narrow defeats against fellow KZN heavyweights Kearsney (31-32) and DHS (20-26) showed just how competitive Marco Engelbrecht’s side had become, even if the results didn’t always reflect it.

Yet it was Michaelhouse’s victories that captured national attention.

House defeated Northwood, widely regarded as one of KwaZulu-Natal’s top rugby schools since 2023, proving they could match the province’s very best. A week before the final Hilton derby, Michaelhouse faced Maritzburg College (who were considered KZN's top team) as underdogs and produced one of their finest performances of the season, defeating College 24-17 on Meadows and building the momentum that would carry them into the Midlands showdown.

Perhaps even more impressive were the Easter Festival performances. Michaelhouse stunned Affies with a thrilling 29-27 victory before following it up with a 40-36 win over Jeppe, two schools consistently ranked among South Africa’s strongest rugby programmes and consistently a top 10 contender in South Africa. Those results announced that Michaelhouse could compete with the country’s elite, not just within KwaZulu-Natal.

Behind the team’s success stood a remarkable group of players.

Alex Jankowitz enjoyed a sensational season and established himself as one of KwaZulu-Natal’s premier schoolboy players.

As the House inside center, he was dominant in contact, relentless around the field and a genuine match-winner, he has every claim to being one of the best players in the province. His selection for the Sharks Craven Week side was richly deserved and further chats about SA Schools is upon him. Alongside him, Nicola Salamousas provided enormous power in the front row, while Aphalele Chamane controlled games superbly from as the prop duo. All three earned starting places for the Sharks U18 side at Craven Week, a remarkable achievement that reflects both their individual excellence and the quality within the Michaelhouse programme.

The depth doesn’t stop there.

Jaydon Jubber’s selection as the starting eighth man for the Sharks U17 side highlighted the strength coming through the ranks. Dynamic with ball in hand and uncompromising defensively, he has all the attributes to become one of the school’s next standout forwards. Fabiano Fierro also emerged as one of the most exciting prospects for 2027. The outside centre possesses genuine attacking flair, pace and vision, making him one of the names to watch next season. At scrumhalf, Ben Hughes consistently dictated the tempo with composed decision-making, sharp service and outstanding game management, quietly becoming one of the team’s most influential performers.

While the headlines rightly celebrate landmark victories over Hilton, Northwood, Affies, Jeppe and Maritzburg College, perhaps the greatest success of the 2026 season was restoring belief. Michaelhouse showed they can compete with the best teams in South Africa. They produced multiple representative players, demonstrated outstanding depth across age groups, and proved that the gap between themselves and the province’s traditional powerhouses has narrowed considerably.

The 2026 season will be remembered not simply for ending an ten-year wait for a home derby victory over Hilton, but as the year Michaelhouse rugby announced its return as a genuine force in South African schoolboy rugby and a Top 10 contender going forward.
