2026 U18 International Rugby Series: Fixtures, Players to Watch & What to Expect

South African schoolboy rugby reaches another major milestone this August as the 2026 U18 International Rugby Series returns to the Western Cape. Once again, the country’s finest young talent will go head-to-head against England, France, Ireland and Georgia, with many future Springboks expected to make their first international impression.

Fresh off an outstanding 2026 Craven Week in Gqeberha, South Africa’s two representative sides - SA Schools and SA Schools A enter the tournament with confidence after another exceptional year of provincial rugby.

Sharks Lead the Way in 2026 Selections

One of the biggest talking points following the announcement of the SA Schools squads is the dominance of the Sharks Rugby Union.

The Sharks boast nine players in the SA Schools squad, the highest of any union in the country, while Western Province contributed eight players.

It highlights the incredible depth of talent currently coming through KwaZulu-Natal and confirms the Sharks as one of South Africa’s leading schoolboy rugby nurseries in 2026. With so many players already attracting attention from franchises and national selectors, this year’s International Series promises to showcase some of the country’s brightest young stars.

Unlike previous years, the tournament will be played across three different venues in the Western Cape:

• Durbanville High School – Opening Day

• Boland Landbou – Matchday Two

• Paarl Gimnasium – Final Day

Each venue has a rich rugby history and is expected to provide an electric atmosphere.

South Africa begin their campaign against a powerful French outfit, while SA Schools ‘A will be eager to test themselves against an always well-drilled Irish side.

The final fixture between South Africa and England is expected to be the headline match of the tournament and could once again decide unofficial bragging rights.

South Africa Players to Watch

Travis Pheiffer (Flyhalf – Paul Roos Gimnasium)

Arguably the most exciting playmaker in South African schoolboy rugby, Travis Pheiffer has been exceptional throughout the 2026 season. Blessed with outstanding vision, an accurate boot and the ability to attack the gain line, he controlled matches during Craven Week and has established himself as one of the country’s premier No.10s.

Expect Pheiffer to be central to everything SA Schools do this August.

Tiaan Basson (Centre – Paul Roos Gimnasium)

One of the breakout stars of Craven Week, Tiaan Basson announced himself on the biggest stage by scoring two tries in Western Province’s dramatic final victory. Strong, direct and elusive with ball in hand, Basson possesses excellent finishing ability while also providing solid defence in midfield. His performances have quickly made him one of South Africa’s most exciting young centres heading into the International Series.

Nicolas Salamousas (Prop – Michaelhouse)

Every successful team is built on a dominant scrum, and Michaelhouse captain Nicolas Salamousas provides exactly that. The powerful tighthead prop enjoyed an outstanding Craven Week, earning deserved SA Schools selection thanks to his scrummaging strength, physical ball carries and leadership qualities. At just schoolboy level, he already possesses the size and presence of a senior front-row forward.

Ethan Barker (Centre – Paarl Gimnasium)

Playing on home soil, Ethan Barker will have plenty of support behind him. The Paarl Gimnasium midfielder combines powerful carries with excellent defensive reads and was one of Western Province’s standout performers throughout the provincial season before earning SA Schools honours.

Luxolo Sonkononkono (Wing – Westville Boys’ High)

One of the quickest outside backs selected this year, Sonkononkono has genuine game-breaking speed and proved throughout Craven Week that he only needs a small opportunity to score. His finishing ability makes him one of the players international defences will need to contain.
